Founded in 2002 by visionary entrepreneur Elon Musk, SpaceX has its eyes fixed on a stellar goal – reaching orbit with its highly ambitious rocket, the Starship. As part of their desperate attempt to accomplish this, they’ve hired Kathy Lueders, the former head of human space flight at NASA, signaling a strategic shift in their approach.
This recent development at SpaceX’s Starbase in Texas comes on the heels of intensive work on the Starship. As we speak, the SpaceX team is applying the finishing touches to the SN20 prototype. This massive spacecraft, powered by Raptor 2 engines, is set to be tested at the Orbital Launch Pad. An estimated next launch date, subject to regulatory approval and weather conditions, has been tentatively set for the late summer of 2023.
This launch represents a tremendous milestone for SpaceX. Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX, believes in pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. His ambitious goal to establish human colonies on Mars is not just a dream; it’s a promise.
Kathy Lueders’ onboarding at SpaceX is a testament to this dedication. Known for her remarkable career at NASA spanning over three decades, Lueders was the linchpin in many significant missions. As the head of human space flight at NASA, she supervised SpaceX’s inaugural astronaut launch in 2020, making her a perfect fit for the Starship project. The symbiotic relationship she’s cultivated with SpaceX over the years is expected to benefit both parties greatly.
While at NASA, Lueders led the $8 billion Commercial Crew Program that resulted in SpaceX and Boeing developing privately owned and operated spaceships. Her leadership was instrumental in marking a new era of commercial space flight on May 30, 2020, when SpaceX launched human passengers aboard the Crew Dragon spaceship.
