Boeing officially admits losing to SpaceX

In September 2009, Boeing announced that it would participate in NASA’s new “commercial crew” program.
The aerospace industry leader vowed to bring its long experience in supporting the space agency and leverage its human spaceflight experience to make the program successful.
In a twist of fate, while SpaceX’s Crew Dragon has become the basis of a commercial space line, operating since May 2020, the Boeing Starliner remains snake bit, and is already being circled by the vultures.
“We have definitely fallen behind in it,” Dave Calhoun, chief executive of Boeing, just admitted in a podcast about Boeing’s work on Starliner when compared to SpaceX’s Crew Dragon.
Is it time to put the ol’ Starliner out of its misery?
Let’s see what Boeing has to say in today’s exciting episode of Great SpaceX!
Boeing’s continuous attempt to compete with SpaceX in the field of manned spaceflight is turning out to be an expensive gamble — verging on fiasco.
Ever since winning the $4.2 billion NASA contract in 2014 to provide “Commercial Crew” space flights to and from the International Space Station, Boeing has racked up nearly $900 million in losses.
It all began with a failed test flight in 2019, causing a huge delay to Boeing’s manned spaceflight program, with an uncrewed Starliner finally limping in to dock with the International Space Station two-and-a-half years later. Boeing was supposed to be back on track with Starliner at that point and had planned to launch Starliner in July 2023.
But now it seems Boeing isn’t going to proceed as planned.
