Lockheed Martin (LMT) was given a contract by the Air Force Research Laboratory to create high-power fibre lasers that will be tested on a tactical fighter jet as component of the continuing development on laser weapons. The Air Force lab’s so-called SHiELD or Self-protect High Energy Laser Demonstrator program includes the fighter jet demonstration project.
The biggest defense enterprise in the nation, Lockheed, employs Rob Afzal as a principal associate for laser weapon systems. “You can power the laser like you can power the automobile off a battery setup,” he said.
