Light Up The Existence: The Story of the Chanukah Menorah

This Festival of Lights

Intense within the heart of cold, there exists a celebration that brings warmth, joy, and a shine to the eyes of those who commemorate it. It is a time of unity, family, and tasty fried foods. Can you guess what festivity I’m talking about? That’s right, it’s Chanukah! And at the center of this festivity is a special nine-armed candelabrum known as the menorah.

The Legend of the Miracle

Myth has it that over 2,000 years ago, the Jewish people were living under the rule of a powerful kingdom. They were not allowed to perform their religion routinely and were subject to harsh laws. But a courageous group called the Maccabees rose up, fought for their liberty, and reclaimed their sacred temple in Jerusalem.

As they entered the temple, they discovered that it had been desecrated by the previous rulers. The sacred menorah, which should have burned day and night, had been extinguished. There was only enough oil left in the temple to keep the menorah lit for one day, but a miracle happened. The oil wondrously lasted for eight whole days, giving the Jewish people enough time to prepare more sacred oil.

And that, my friends, is why we celebrate Chanukah for eight nights and light the menorah, adding one candle each night to remember the miracle of the oil!

Understanding the Chanukah Lights

The menorah is much more than just a lovely piece of Judaica. It holds deep symbolism and meaning. The central candle, known as the shamash, is used to light the other candles. It represents the importance of spreading illumination, heat, and compassion to others.

The other eight candles are called the “Chanukah lights” and are placed in a row, one for each night of the holiday. They remind us of the eight nights the oil miraculously burned in the temple. Each night, we add one more candle and watch as the menorah glows brighter and brighter.

It’s traditional to place the menorah in a window to share the light with the outside world. By doing so, we fulfill the commandment of “pirsum ha-nes,” which means “publicizing the phenomenon.” This act serves as a reminder to ourselves and others that even in the darkest times, there is always hope and light to be found.

Kindling the Menorah

Now that you understand the meaning behind the menorah, let’s chat about how to illuminate it. First, you’ll need a menorah with nine candle holders – eight for the Chanukah lights and one for the shamash.

On the first night of Chanukah, you’ll place one candle in the far right holder and ignite it with the shamash. Say the blessing “Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech haolam, asher kid’shanu b’mitzvotav v’tsivanu l’hadlik ner shel Chanukah” which means “Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to light the Chanukah lights.”

As the nights go on, you’ll add one candle each night, starting from the right and moving towards the left. On the eighth night, all the candles will be lit, creating a beautiful and significant display of light.
