Deutsche Elections 2021: A Politische Achterbahn

A Political Crazy Ride

Germany, known for its effective technology, iconic Oktoberfest, and sausages, also is well-known as its stable and predictable politic scene. However, the upcoming German elections in 2021 have sparked an influx of excitement,
uncertainty, and anticipation amongst both Deutsche citizens and international observers. With Chancellor Angela Merkel, who has been in power for 16 years, stepping down, the race to succeed her has become a thrilling roller coaster.

New Personalities, Fresh Hopes

One of the most striking elements of the forthcoming elections lies in the emergence of several new faces on the political stage. With Merkel’s departure, her party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has nominated Armin Laschet, the Minister President of North Rhine-Westphalia, as their candidate for Chancellor. Laschet is known for his moderate stance and experience in governing the most populous state in Germany.

On another note, the main opposition party, the Social Democratic Party, has nominated Olaf Scholz, this Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister in Merkel’s coalition government. Scholz, with his solid economic background, is considered as an influential contender and aims to lead a progressive and socially focused government.

Adding to this enthusiasm, the Green Party has put forward Annalena Baerbock as their candidate for Chancellor. Baerbock, a and vibrant politician, has been focusing on environmental and climate issues, attracting interest of young voters and those worried about sustainability.

Coalitions and Alliances

With no party expected to achieve an absolute majority, forming coalitions and alliances will be crucial in deciding the future government. Christian Democratic Union, traditionally known as its center-right policies, has formed an alliance with its Christian Social Union (CSU) in Bavaria, a local sister party. This union, known as the Union, has been a dominant force in German politics for decades. However, the Union’s popularity has been challenged recently due to a series of scandals and internal disagreements.

On another note, Social Democratic Party, aiming for a return to power, is willing to forming alliances with both the Green Party and the Left Party. This potential alliance, known as the “traffic light coalition”, due to the parties’ associated colors (red, green, and yellow), would represent a move to an increasingly progressive and environmentally conscious government.

Another possible coalition is a “Jamaica coalition,” which would bring together the CDU/CSU, the Green Party, and the Free Democratic Party (FDP). This alliance, named after the colors of the Jamaican flag, has been previously explored but failed to materialize due to policy differences and ideological clashes.

The Rise of Alternative Parties

While traditional parties continue to dominate German politics, the forthcoming elections have also seen an emergence of alternative parties. The right-wing populist party, Alternative for Germany (AfD), has gained popularity in recent years by focusing on anti-immigration and Euroskeptic policies. Their presence in Germany’s parliament, the Bundestag, has stirred debates and controversy.

Another notable party is Germany’s Left, formerly the successor to East Germany’s Socialist Unity Party. Left advocates for socialistic policies and has been successful in attracting voters from economically disadvantaged regions, especially in Eastern Germany. However, its radical views and history have also made it the target for scrutiny and criticism.

The Impact of COVID-19

As with everything else, COVID-19 has left its mark on the elections. The handling of the pandemic, vaccination campaigns, and economic recovery plans have become crucial issues for candidates and parties alike.

The global health crisis has also affected campaigning and voter engagement. Traditional rallies and public events have given way by virtual meetings and online campaigns. Political advertisements and debates have taken the digital stage, reaching voters through social media platforms, podcasts, and livestreams.

The pandemic has not only shifted the political landscape but also highlighted the significance of strong leadership, crisis management, and solidarity among nations.

Challenges and Opportunities Ahead

The forthcoming German elections offer both challenges and opportunities for Germany and its citizens. The new government will have to navigate the aftermath of the pandemic, rebuild the economy, address social inequalities, and tackle pressing issues such as climate change, immigration, and digital transformation.

As countries around the world eagerly awaits the outcome of Germany’s elections, it is clear that Germany’s political landscape is undergoing a significant shift. Whether it leads to a continuation of Merkel’s pragmatic approach or a new era of progressive policies, one thing is certain – Germany is in for an exciting ride.
