The Starship program is now moving into a important testing phase when Booster 9 conducted a static test fire of the Raptor engines with the water spray in use. This follows last week’s testing of Booster 9, the water spray system, and other significant work at Starbase.

Prior to a static firing test with a nearly full set firing of Raptor engines on the weekend, the Spin Prime test requirement, which was finished on Friday, needed to be carried out.

On Thursday, July 20, Booster 9 was brought out to the orbital launch pad from Starbase’s manufacturing plant and lifted into the OLM. Before the booster’s Proof test, which is planned to take place on the upcoming Starship launch, a significant amount of work was completed in the OLM and launch pad area.

In the methane tank of Booster 9 on Sunday, LOX and liquid nitrogen were added for what SpaceX described as a fueling test. As a booster was tested on the OLM for the first time since the dramatic Starship first flight on April 20, both tanks filled to capacity.

Before the booster was detanked over a period of many hours, it appeared that the test had a prolonged hold during which the cryogenic fluids were left in the tanks. An access door was opened at the foot of the liquid oxygen tank once the testing was finished, and personnel looked around. What was done is unknown, but the location is now once more off-limits.

SpaceX started getting ready for the next critical phase of the booster’s test campaign as employees aboard Booster 9 were inspecting the liquid oxygen tank. An entire pressure test was now required for the water spray system that had been installed beneath the OLM. A partial pressure test had been performed earlier in the month.

Large water jets were seen emerging from the steel plates under the OLM on July 28 during the full-pressure deluge test, which seemed to be successful. Aside from the Raptor rocket engines’ nozzles, the water was angled to avoid them.

Following the release of pressure from the deluge water tank farm behind the launch tower, there was an eight- to ten-second flow of water that lasted for about that long.

The exterior holes line up with the locations of the outer 20 Raptor engines on the rocket, while the inner holes are arranged in the pattern of a hexagon.

Ship 28 was relocated on Friday, July 21 to the former Massey’s gun range, which has been transformed into a SpaceX test site, for proof testing with fuel. The tenth Starship booster was moved out of Massey’s on the same day and arrived in the “rocket garden” at the production site on Saturday after midnight.

After being loaded with cryogenic fluids on Friday, The 28th Starship was observed with frost lines on its LOX and methane fuel tanks. Assuming the test proved successful, the spacecraft, which is outfitted with fins, tiles, and a payload compartment, is now anticipated to roll back to the construction facility to have its Raptor engines installed. This ship has since rolled back to the Production Site and is anticipated to be used with the tenth Starship booster for the third Starship test launch.
