Elon Musk is has declared “all systems green” for the test flight of the most powerful rocket ever built, Starship, designed to one day send astronauts to the Moon and Mars.

The 390ft rocket, which has been picked by NASA for its return to the lunar surface, is on the launch pad at the billionaire’s SpaceX spaceport in Boca Chica, Texas. It is due to launch at any moment from 2.28pm UK time.

The mission has already been delayed once, after a frozen valve led to issues with fuelling the rocket during its first attempt on Monday.

Mr Musk has sought to manage expectations for the first launch, saying on Sunday his main objective for the mission was “just don’t blow up the launchpad.”

The super heavy Starship rocket has been picked by the US space agency for its 2025 Artemis III Moon mission, the first time mankind will return to the Moon’s surface since the Apollo programme ended in 1972.

The most powerful rocket ever developed is about to attempt a maiden launch.

Known as Starship, the rocket has been built by Elon Musk’s SpaceX company.

It stands almost 120m (400ft) high and is designed to have almost double the thrust of any rocket in history.

Monday’s uncrewed demonstration will lift off from Boca Chica in Texas, and plans to complete almost one full circuit of the globe.

Big rockets emit tremendous amounts of energy — and none more than SpaceX’s Starship, the most powerful rocket in the world, which generates thrust twice as powerful as the Saturn V rocket that flew the Apollo astronauts toward the moon.
On Thursday, during its lift-off, the Starship, which stands at nearly 400 feet tall, spread debris like mortar fire for hundreds of yards, leaving behind a crater beneath its launch mount and causing dents in nearby storage tanks. As a result, there are concerns regarding the extent of repairs needed and when SpaceX will be able to attempt a launch again.
Immediately, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk just gave huge updates on SpaceX Stage 0 after being blown up by 33 engines.
So what is SpaceX’s solution?

April 20, 2023, will go down in history as the first time SpaceX launched a fully-integrated Starship –the world’s largest and most powerful rocket to ever soar into the sky. Starship lifted off at 8:33 a.m. Central Time from Starbase at Boca Chica Beach, Texas, with the power of 33 methane-fueled Raptor V2 engines that roared with intense force. Combined, the engines are capable of generating over 16.5 million pounds of thrust lifted off and cleared the tower, leaving behind a massive plume and flame.
Everyone was relieved that Starship had moved, but the damage wrought by Starship’s 33 first-stage Raptor engines was considerable.
It “left a large crater in the concrete under the launch mount”. Well, the concrete surrounding the OLM also disappeared.

Elon Musk’s Starship rocket has blown up around three minutes after blasting off in an explosive end to its first launch attempt.

The 390ft rocket, which has been picked by NASA for its return to the lunar surface, took off shortly after 2.33pm.

Starship was supposed to blast 150 miles high in the atmosphere, before cruising for around an hour and splashing down in the Pacific Ocean. However, the mission ended early after the separation of the first and second stages of the rocket appeared to fail.
